- 'Why are you doing this?' - Frankly we're struggling to make ends meet here especially since the site got more popular. The only way we can think to cover our costs is to run ads, but if so many of you keep blocking them. 'But I never click ads!' - Doesn't matter, you should only click them if they interest you.

We get paid based on the number of views AND the number of clicks. 'You ruined the site!!!1!

I want to send you hate mail!!' - Another fact - We have the software and the power to completely block adblock users from our site, but we're not going to, at least for now. We figure most of you would like to support us and you only installed Adblock because of other sites that aren't so considerate with their ad placement. Please, don't punish us because of them, in the seven or so years I've been a blogger/webmaster I've ALWAYS considered the need to balance monetisation with reader experience.

I want to build an audience not send them away. So go on, whitelist us and any other site you love.

If it wasn't for ads, the internet would lose a whole chunk of really great niche content like this, which would be a real shame in our opinion. Now, go ahead and read the page if you want to, but wouldn't it be much more convenient if you just whitelisted us?:).

Genre: Flight Simulator Release Year: 2000 Developer: Zipper Interactive Publisher: Microsoft Studios Age Rating: 12+ Playability Status: Perfect Tested On: Windows 10 x64 Availability: Copyright retained - Out of print/unavailable Flight simulators will always have a home on the PC. The complex cockpit controls of a real aircraft simply cannot map to the simple, user friendly game controllers that games consoles are limited to. That doesn’t mean every flight simulator is strictly for aviation nerds though. Crimson Skies is one flight game that has some elements common to more traditional flight simulators, but more of a focus on fun, exciting dogfighting than the deep technicalities of real aircraft flight. Installation The game should install without any issues on a modern PC. Simply place the disc in your computers optical drive and follow the on screen prompts. If installation does not start automatically, browse to the CD and run the SETUP.EXE file manually.

When asked what type of installation you want to perform, we recommend doing a full installation. Patching Before you take to the skies, there are two patches that you should install after installing the game. Official patch 1.2 – Fixes various bugs in the game. Download it and install it simply by running it. Note that if you have a later edition of the game, you may not need this patch as your game may be pre-patched. If this is the case the patch will simply tell you that it is already installed. Crimson Skies fix (Csfix) – This is a fan-made patch that lets the game run smoothly on more modern versions of Windows.

You can download it The patch is downloaded as a 7-zip file, to extract it you must use the popular 7-zip program. If you’ve never used this program before, there’s an extensive tutorial.

To install this patch, first browse to the Crimson Skies installation directory (C: Program Files (x86) Microsoft Games Crimson Skies by default) and make a backup copy of the “Crimson.exe” game file. Now, extract the entire contents of the csfix.7z archive into the Crimson Skies game directory, overwriting the existing Crimson Skies game file (you have a backup, so no need to worry!). You’re now ready to play, but before you do that, you might want to check the next section regarding screen resolutions. Setting screen resolution Crimson Skies is a 4:3 aspect ratio (non-widescreen) game. The Csfix file, however, lets the game run in any resolution of your choosing. If you leave this as the default, the game will simply run at the highest available resolution. Since this is a widescreen resolution on most modern PCs, the game will appear stretched out of proportion.

To fix this problem, you need to open and edit the csfix.ini file in Notepad or your favourite text editor. If you’re not familiar with editing configuration files,.

Crimson

To change the default resolution, first find the line that begins “OverrideRes” and make sure this now reads “OverrideRes=1” (do not copy the quotation marks). Directly below this line you should see the lines “ScreenWidth” and “ScreenHeight”. You can now edit these to any suitable 4:3 screen resolution, such as 1024×768 (ScreenWidth=1024 ScreenHeight=768) or 1280×1024 (technically that’s 5:4, but whatever). Another option is to create a custom resolution.

On more modern gaming graphics cards, you can use your graphics card software to create a screen mode such as 1440×1080, which is basically 1080p but in 4:3 aspect ratio. By doing this you get as close to 1080p as possible without stretching the image out of proportion. Whichever method you choose, don’t forget to save the changes in the file before closing your text editor. With the patching process completed, you can now start the game. Starting the game Start Crimson Skies from its Start menu or desktop shortcut as normal.

When you start the game, the following window will appear. You can ignore what’s in the “Screen Resolution” box altogether, as the resolution you set in csfix.ini will override this. You should make sure that “Video Device” is set to “Accelerator” however. Then, simply click on “OK”. You may find that one of the initial loading screens is displayed in the wrong colours, but it should only be this one screen. Tweaking visual quality There are a handful of visual quality settings you can change from the games main menu.

Start the game and from the main menu, click on “Preferences” and then “Video”. You should then see the following options. This is an old game, so simply crank up the settings to the maximum as per the screenshot above.

The exception to this is the “Screen Resolution” box, which you can ignore as this is overridden by the Csfix tool. Even a modest recent PC should be able to deal with these settings without breaking a sweat. Don’t forget to click on “Accept Changes” when you are done. Configuring controls With the csfix file installed, the game should support Xbox 360 controllers out of the box. You will still need your keyboard to hand to use some of the more advanced controls however.

Troubleshooting Problems saving games or settings:- Like many older games, Crimson Skies stores its save game files and other configuration information in its installation directory. If you installed the game into the program files or program files (x86) folders, you may find that the default Windows security settings prevent the game from saving any progress.

You may also be unable to edit the csfix.ini file and save your changes. To fix this problem set the permissions on your game folder so that your user account has full control/read write permissions. You can find a tutorial on how to configure folder permissions. Saved games themselves are stored in the “SavedGames” folder within the games root directory. Screenshots Our regular screenshot tool didn’t seem to work with this game, so here are a couple of screenshots we took from around the web.

Overview Nathan Zachary, gentleman air pirate and leader of the Fortune Hunters, is back at it again. Romancing the ladies and downing privateers is no trouble for this man of adventure, especially when his gang of dangerous rogues backs him! Is the story of Nathan Zachary and the Fortune Hunters, a band of air pirates in a alternate version of 1930’s America. The United States has fractured into many small states and the federal plans for a highway and rail transportation system lay unused. America has fallen into a deep depression and the economy has faltered from the lack of reliable trade.

In response, people have taken to the air and the zeppelin has become the in-country freighter of choice. With their massive payloads and the advantage of air travel, they can transport supplies to wherever they’re needed. Thieves and cutthroats haven’t ignored the advances in aeronautics either, as marauding bands of pirates take to the skies to steal cargo from unwary transport captains. Along with the rogues come legitimate air security firms and state militia, mobilizing their own attack squadrons to repel the pirate threat.

Gameplay, Controls, Interface An extremely accurate and detailed flight simulation, it isn’t. However, bad grammar aside, Crimson Skies is still a joyous romp into the skies of an alternate 1930’s America and the game makes no excuses regarding its unrealistic and somewhat fanciful view of airplane handling. Performing an immelman loop is nearly as easy as making a banking turn and the learning curve for a new pilot is not very demanding. In some flight games, these features could be seen as a negative, a strike against the designers, but not so in Crimson Skies. Without a doubt, what will grip you first is the ease of piloting.

Crimson Skies Windows 10

Banking, looping, and diving all become easy with this forgiving interface and you’ll hardly ever have to deal with the problem of a stalled motor. Guns and rockets abound, spitting defeat at your enemies by the barrel load. In some missions, you’ll even get the chance to leap out of your plane and capture an enemy aircraft. You don’t get to control your pilot as he does this of course, but the thrill is the same nonetheless. Graphics By far the best aspect of Crimson Skies is gameplay.

Trailing not far behind are the graphics, with wonderfully detailed and unique designs for aircraft, vivid models of zeppelins and similar airships, and an overall sense of design that amazes the eye. Explosions, model detail, and environment are all rendered wonderfully, providing a detailed and interesting environment in which to fly. I couldn’t let this review pass without congratulating the Crimson Skies team on translating the bizarre and amazing designs of Crimson Skies aircraft into the digital environment.

The first time you see a Hughes Bloodhawk sweep out of the sky towards you, something just feels right in the world and it continues to feel right as you rain a hail of lead into the Bloodhawk’s airframe. Audio Voice acting for Crimson Skies is well done, but not spectacular. The characters are slightly over the top, especially on the part of some of the mercenaries and militia members you encounter.

The soundtrack is mildly entertaining, but far too short, leaving the bad taste of repetition in my mouth. Triumphant and blustery, this aspect of the game could’ve used more work. As an added disappointment, the engine that Crimson Skies runs is prone to performance issues related to sound. System Requirements PII 266mhz, 8MB 3D Video Card (for 3D graphics), 4x CD-ROM, Win95/98/ME/2K, and 32MB RAM (64 for W2K, 96MB for Multiplayer). Reviewed On: AMD K6/2 400mhz, Win98, 64MB RAM, 4GB HD, Diamond Viper V700U, Creative Labs Soundblaster AWE 64, and a 24x CD-ROM Cool Feature The campaign included with Crimson Skies was built with an eye to acrobatics and wild stunts. On nearly every mission there are areas you can fly under, around, through, and within.

As a bonus to the player, completing one of these challenging stunts earns you a photo and news article, earning you extra cash to equip your crew with. Documentation Well in keeping with the theme of Crimson Skies, the documentation is littered with advertisements and national propaganda, lending to the mystique of an adventurous air pirate. Bottom Line While suffering from some initial problems with a repetitive soundtrack and audio related performance issues, Crimson Skies makes up for it with strong and unique gameplay, detailed graphics, and a 1930’s feeling that just won’t quit. All of you fans out there better sit up and take notice, this is the closest you’ll ever get.
