Non-PostScript Printer QuarkXPress functions best when you print to a device that incorporates support for Adobe PostScript. This page-description language forms the basis of graphics in EPS format, commonly exported from illustration software programs as a means of incorporating vector graphics in page layouts. Many QuarkXPress layout features look different when you don't print them on PostScript hardware - including EPS files, because the software must create a rasterized representation of them, store the resulting temporary file on your hard drive and print from it. Additionally, many QuarkXPress print features become unavailable without PostScript output support. If you don't use a PostScript output device, you can create PDF files from your QuarkXPress layouts and print those instead.

This selection triggers the software to read the specialized features stored in the PostScript Printer Definition file, or PPD, that's installed with the driver files for your output hardware. The PPD Manager also includes an option to use an auxiliary PPD folder. Before you change to an alternate location, the PPD Manager shows you the default folder in which you'll find your PPDs. After you create an auxiliary folder, copy the PPDs you want from the default location and paste the copies into your new repository. When you revisit the PPD Manager in QuarkXPress, you can select your auxiliary folder and limit the PPDs to the ones you copied.
